There aren’t standard work hours but people are usually trying to get work done between 8:30a to 5pm.
People should be able to focus on their jobs or other projects during these hours.
Keep things relatively calm and quiet. (See On Disruptions below)
Help other people focus when they have to.
Notice when people need to focus and look out for them. If you notice people being too loud or distracting, let them know.
Everyone is ultimately responsible for protecting their focus. Bring headphones or earbuds just in case.
Headsets for calls work really well.
If someone is talking way too loud in their meeting, feel free to let them know. It’s easy to think you have to talk louder when you’re wearing headphones, or when the people you’re talking to are thousands of miles away, but you can usually talk quietly in a call and be heard just as well. Feel free to remind others and yourself of this.
Be okay with communicating when you need to focus. Be okay with asking people to quiet down if they’re being too loud.
It is okay to take calls in the main area. If you’d like, you’re free to take meetings or calls in the conference room if it’s available.
It can be expected that people will be eating lunch at The Company between 12 and 1pm. This comes with an inherent amount of disruption, frivolity, shenanigans, and joy.
(Specifying lunch range not only helps people avoid disruption if they need to, but makes it more likely that people can eat together! People with agency over their work schedules can try to get meetings scheduled outside of this time, or people not working from here can drop during that time with a reasonable expectation that they’ll find some company to eat with.)
If you expect to be particularly disruptive in the main room outside of that hour, please give a more-than-15-minute heads up in #workday and/or put it on the Internal Calendar.
Remember that this is a workplace, so people need to be able to use the main room for working for most of the day. In general, we would like to avoid "reservations" and disruptions during the workday, but a heads up if you think things might be loud is always helpful.
